"So many people are shut up tight inside themselves like boxes, yet they would open up, unfolding quite wonderfully, if only you were interested in them." ~Sylvia PlathIf you have the time, "Tell me about yourself" is one of the best opening lines.
If you ask a young person that question, they'll tell you about art and philosophy and music and hobbies.
Old people usually just tell you their occupation. They've been stuck in their boxes a little longer, so you have to pry a little harder to let them out.
... I have always been fond of telling people that I am what they see ... that usually causes them to take a step back... what I am to me is exclusive to me and does not need to be independently verified... just as what someone thinks of me is their own perception and observation...
ReplyDeleteNow that's an interesting observation I'll have to check out.
ReplyDeleteI will say, when I'm faced with that 'opening' it's not my occupation I answer with. I issue them a playful warning and my eyes (apparently) smile.
But I do agree with Sylvia--it just takes a bit of interest and you get so much.
